English version below.

CRAFTSMEN AND BINGO

On what connects craftsmen and bingo, why it always implies danger having them in your house, and on this one situation, in which looks and even the weight of women never matter at all.

I had to allow craftsmen to enter my apartment. Unfortunately, this time it was not possible to decidedly look for a female team, who would fix my rooms, so it was rather obvious that it would be an all-male team, who would spread into my privacy – and that is exactly what happened.

I was nervous before the appointed time. One of the very few places, where equality, solidarity, and respect are a reality to an extent I would wish to see everywhere, becomes the stage for verbal assaults and the violation of boundaries, that are masked as compliments and so-called ‚Herrenwitze‘ (‚men’s jokes‘), which are true to that name, since only cis-men think them funny.
How do I know this? Because it is exactly like that every single time – not only in my experience, but in every woman’s experience I have talked to during my research for this text. It was obvious that every available action perceived as non-punishable is used to establish and maintain hierarchical structures.

‚Violence is always the dark core of power relations,‘ Alice Schwarzer once wrote. (Alice im Männerland.) And although I do not feel as close to Ms. Schwarzer as I used to do, she is absolutely right with her aptly put statement.
The newly entered space, even if it is only a woman’s bathroom, is immediately occupied and turned into a political issue. The conflict, that seemingly starts with opening the door, is fought out by means of violence in the form of gestures and verbal expressions, that clearly have a cis-male connotation. The (obviously perceived as such) superiority of the bathroom owner has to be destroyed, for the craftsmen to be able to relax again in their usual political habitat: patriarchy.

One specific statement illustrating the situation: ‚You know, I’m very good at laying pipes,‘ said with a blatantly ambiguous vocal tone and matching macho attitude. In this case, coming closer, prancing, with straddled legs – the way to stand per se, when it comes to occupying space, that is not yours to take (manspreading in U-Bahn rides etc.).

If it wasn’t for the underlying misogyny, I would be inclined to yawn and feel pity, for how fragile does one’s own identity have to be, if the mere existence of a woman in the same space calls for these measures.

And no: THIS IS NOT A COMPLIMENT!

In my opinion, a compliment is a beautifully phrased truth, that is directly and exclusively related to the addressed person, with the aim of showing the person concerned: I see you, it’s about you, I celebrate you and I want you to know.

Not one of these aspects can be applied to the above mentioned approach. It is all about sexualizing the situation, forcing the woman into a certain position where she does not feel comfortable. And making it all look like a joke in order to give her a feeling of not having the actual right to complain. She is exposed to the right degree of dominance and physical superiority to have her submit to the oppression – in her own home.

At this point, I would like to show you the perfectly fitting Street Harassment Bingo, that I have found at Holla Back DC. It lists all common reasons used to relativize assaults. The blog is generally worth your while.

With all this, it is totally irrelevant how women look. The fact that they are not cis-men is enough. Aspects like weight, hair, trends, clothes, body shape, and all other features women are always judged by – this is probably the only situation where they are of no concern. Because it is not about real appreciation, but oppression disguised as fun. Here is another example that led to quite a controversy in Germany.

This assault, the so-called harassment, likely to be sexual as well and always directed at violating a woman’s dignity, is actually a criminal offence in Austria and Germany. Good to know, and I support every possible legal action against it. But what is the worth of that law, if even a woman who is known through media can be drugged, raped, and finally charged herself with false testimony. #TeamGinaLisa.

Incidents like this clearly prove, we are living in a society tolerating rape culture. Women are granted rights by law, even though that was and still is a long way to go, but that does not mean these rights can be realized and made use of. I stress this point because it is exactly these systems that provide cis-men with assurance and self-importance and make women bear it (silently).

Frequently, other circumstances support this system, like an actual or perceived dependence on e.g. pay or in this case a service to be rendered by the perpetrator. The fact that I want to use my bathroom again forces me into a position where I have to put up with anything and be thankful, even though I pay for it. And it seems to feel the same for the perpetrators. It is especially important to set clear limits and emphasize that any transgression will not be tolerated. Even if it means getting by without a bathroom for another day, it is still safer than exposing yourself to danger. I would advise every woman not to be alone in situations like this. No matter if it is totally relaxed or if there really is a need for a witness or a verbatim record, which can help with a simple complaint as well as with legal proceedings.

Misconduct of this and other kinds against women does affect society as a whole. It is not to be tolerated – structurally and individually. Calling attention to it and exposing jokes or degrading ‚compliments‘ can help. It is very important for women to talk about it, to exchange and publicize experiences, to share with the public.

For all twitter, instagram or facebook users among you, take a look at the following hashtags: #ausnahmslos, #aufschrei, #nowomanever, #rapeculture.

And because this city is kind of my home now, too, a link in Berlin.

For all women who want to have female, loud support in a situation like this: I like carrot cake. With milk!
